Images of St Kilda

These images have been digitised from slides made by Bill Lawson.

A rocky, green peninsula extends into the sea under a cloudy sky. Sheep graze on grassy slopes in the foreground. The landscape recalls St Kilda, a remote archipelago known for its steep cliffs rising above the water. The area is characterized by rugged terrain and dramatic coastal scenery.
The stone ruins of abandoned houses with chimneys are scattered across a grassy, hilly landscape, bordered by low stone walls. These structures are situated under a cloudy sky. The scene is characteristic of the evacuated settlements on St Kilda, an isolated archipelago in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The remains indicate historical habitation and practices such as drystone wall construction and crofting. Today, these ruins serve as evidence of past human occupation and land use in this remote area.
A rocky mountain, associated with St Kilda ancestry, rises on the left side of the scene. The sky above is cloudy and populated with numerous small birds in flight, scattered across the atmosphere.
A single puffin stands among large mossy rocks. The bird is partially obscured by the landscape, but its colorful beak and white facial markings are visible. The scene includes natural features suggestive of remote or rugged terrain, similar to environments found on St Kilda, an archipelago in Scotland known for its seabird populations, including puffins.
The landscape is characterized by steep, rocky cliffs that rise above dark water. The cliffs are dotted with green vegetation. Low clouds or mist are present, creating a moody and atmospheric effect. This scene is consistent with the remote geography and natural features associated with St Kilda, known for its ancestral significance and dramatic terrain.
A dark rocky cliff rises from the lower left against a cloudy, pale blue sky. The sky contains numerous distant birds scattered in flight. This landscape is characteristic of remote areas such as St Kilda, known for their rugged cliffs and seabird populations.
A rugged green cliff slopes down to the sea, where waves break against a rocky shoreline. This landscape is reminiscent of scenes associated with St Kilda ancestry. In the distance, a small boat sails near a solitary islet under a partly cloudy sky.
A high cliff overlooks a rocky shoreline with waves impacting the rocks below. The ocean beneath is deep blue in color. At the cliff’s edge, grass and hardy vegetation grow amid exposed rock. This scene references St Kilda ancestry, a group associated historically with the remote St Kilda archipelago off Scotland’s coast, noted for its rugged terrain and challenging living conditions. The view includes geological formations typical of such islands, with wind-resistant plant life established where soil accumulates along the cliff tops.
The scene depicts a steep, dark rocky peak reminiscent of those found on St Kilda, an archipelago in Scotland known for its rugged cliffs and significant seabird populations. The peak is densely covered with thousands of white seabirds, most likely northern gannets or similar colonial seabirds common to the region. Numerous other birds are seen flying above the peak against a pale sky, indicating active bird movement typical during nesting or feeding periods. In the foreground, one large bird—possibly a gannet—is prominently shown soaring with wings extended.
A rugged coastline with steep, rocky cliffs covered in green grass extends into a calm, blue ocean under a partly cloudy sky. Small islets are visible in the water near the cliffs. This landscape is characteristic of locations such as St Kilda, known for its remote geography and distinct topography shaped by natural forces over time.
The perspective is from within a dark cave, looking outward toward the sea. Sunlight outside illuminates a green hillside and the water, resulting in a pronounced silhouette effect at the caves entrance. The interior of the cave remains mostly unlit, creating strong contrast with the brightness outside. The landscape visible beyond recalls associations with St Kilda ancestry—an area noted for its remote Scottish environment and cultural history. Within the cave, sound may carry faintly due to echoes caused by the enclosed stone surfaces.
A steep, rocky cliff covered in patches of green grass rises above the ocean. The scene is characteristic of landscapes associated with St Kilda ancestry. Waves break against the base of the cliff, and the sky is partly cloudy.
A rocky, green hillside slopes sharply down to a deep blue sea under a partly cloudy sky. This landscape is characteristic of the remote, rugged beauty associated with the St Kilda archipelago. In the distance, a small boat is visible near an isolated rock island on the horizon.
A small brown mouse with St Kilda ancestry and a long tail sits on a rough, gray rock. The area around the rock features patches of green grass.
The aerial view depicts an ancient village characterized by stone ruins dispersed across a green valley. The surrounding terrain consists of hills, and a curving road traverses the landscape. This area is noted for its associations with St Kilda ancestry.
A jagged rocky cliff, displaying abundant green vegetation and associated with St Kilda ancestry, rises steeply from the calm blue sea. Several birds are present in flight near the cliffs, beneath a sky that is partly covered by clouds.
A small coastal village is situated between green hills and the sea. The village is composed of white buildings, and traces of stone structures are present across the grassy landscape, indicating connections to the ancestry of St Kilda. A curving road provides access from the settlement down to the shore.
A rugged mountain ridge covered in green grass and scattered rocks stretches beneath a cloudy blue sky. The scene is characteristic of landscapes associated with St Kilda ancestry, featuring distant peaks visible on the horizon.
A steep, rocky sea stack rises sharply from the ocean under a cloudy sky. Numerous birds fly around its peak. The calm waters and remote setting are characteristic of locations like St Kilda in Scotland, known for their rugged landscapes and abundant seabird populations.
Steep, rocky sea cliffs associated with St Kilda ancestry ascend above dark blue ocean waves. Patches of grass are visible along the cliff tops. A few birds are flying near the edge of the cliffs. In the distance, a small island can be seen offshore.
A rocky, green-topped island rises from the ocean under a partly cloudy blue sky. Choppy waves are visible in the foreground, and a small rock outcrop appears to the left. This landscape is reminiscent of St Kilda, an isolated archipelago west of mainland Scotland known for its dramatic terrain and historic significance to the people who once inhabited it.
A rocky, green-topped island associated with St Kilda ancestry is situated in a choppy, dark blue sea beneath a partly cloudy sky. To the left of the main island, there is a smaller rock formation.
Standing atop a high cliff, one observes the vertical drop to the shoreline below. The rocky coast is subject to continuous wave action, with water striking and retreating from protruding stone formations. The ocean appears deep blue, indicating depth and lack of suspended sediments near the surface. On the cliff’s slopes and ledges, green vegetation grows in isolated patches, adapted to windy conditions and salt spray. This landscape is characteristic of many Hebridean islands such as St Kilda, combining precipitous landforms with Atlantic weather patterns.
