The mid-19th century was a turbulent period in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. This intriguing book by Flora Johnson, an experienced freelance writer and researcher, examines the role of the Church in dealing with and responding to the challenges of the mid-19th century in the islands of North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist.

Flora Johnston is a writer and researcher of all things Scottish. She has spent many years researching and telling Scotland’s stories in exhibitions, books and digital media, and is delighted now to be doing this in the way she loves most, through fiction. Her debut novel What You Call Free was published in March 2021.
