Donald MacLeod of Bearnairaigh – nicknamed The Old Trojan – was a Jacobite supporter. When his chief, MacLeod of Dunvegan, called for him to provide 20 men for the Hanoverian army he did so.
But he sent MacLeod a message declaring that he would normally have served at their head but he had a more imperious duty which called him. He then joined the Jacobite army!
After Culloden, he spent some time in hiding in a cave on Sron Ulladal, one of the hills in the North Harris deer-forest, and later at Gob na Tobha, the headland at Taobh Tuath. Donald MacLeod’s grave is at St Clement’s Church at Roghadal.
